However, all focus is now on oh Goh Liu Ying, who has managed to capture the hearts of Malaysians with both her shuttling skills as well as her impeccable beauty. However, know that there are much more to her than just badminton and a pretty face.

Liu Ying and Peng Soon were considered underdogs in the event, and not much were expected of their performance – that is until they showed Malaysians what they are capable of when they reached the finals, making them the first pair of Malaysians to ever achieve silver in the event.
XOX Offered them RM100,000 If They Win Gold
Talk about motivation! Local telco XOX offered the pair RM100,000 should they beat Indonesia’s Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, who ranked third in the world rankings (Liu Ying and Peng Soon ranked 11). Unfortunately, they succumbed to the Indonesian’s pressure and had to give up their dreams of Gold, at least for now.

Kosmo came up with a headline that says “Peng Soon-Liu Ying Disappoints Millions Of Malaysian Fans’ this morning, pretty harsh considering they weren’t expected to win anything in the first place! Obviously fans were enraged at the statement, especially when they technically won silvers for Malaysia, and were the first in history for mixed-doubles!
She Once Attended Modelling School
Liu Ying once said in an interview that she had attended modelling school, supposedly under Amber Chia academy. She also once said she’s hoping to give Malaysian badminton a fresh look – by playing good and looking stylish … just like her tennis idol Maria Sharapova.
Liu Ying’s a Magazine Cover Model Too!
Her modelling school had paid off when she was chosen to be on the cover of Malaysia’s Long Life magazine in April 2015. She’s also the model for kinesiology tape, and if you look at her photoshoot, it’s hard to imagine that this girl can be very vicious when she is on the court.
Considers a Career in Acting Post-Retirement
Most athletes have it hard after they retire, in fact reports say 24% of all athlete suffers financially once they are out of the game. Well, not Liu Ying, as she already has plan in place once she leaves the game, she once said in an interview with 988 that she considers a career in acting once her professional badminton days are over.
Scouted And Trained Professionally Since 15
Carrying the dreams of her father and coach, Liu Ying had been training professionally since the age of 15 under coach Jeramy Gan, who believes she has the ability to become a world beater. He was right.
Plagued With Knee Injuries Since 2008
Seeing her impressive performance in the Olympics, it’s hard to see Liu Ying as someone who had just recovered from a surgery, to address a knee injury that had been plaguing her since 2008. She was supposed to perform the surgery years ago, but had been putting it off due to the national team’s commitments.
