2. Second Partnership Between Proton & Geely
The Proton X50 is the second all-new product to result from the partnership between Proton and Geely.
The compact SUV is built on the group’s BMA (B-segment Modular Architecture) that is shared with Geely and Volvo products.
3. 6 Colours
Proton X50 will be offered with six exterior colours, namely Snow White, Jet Grey, Armour Silver, Ocean Blue, Citric Orange and Passion Red.
4. Spec differences between Standard, Executive, Premium and Flagship
1.5T Standard, 1.5T Executive, 1.5T Premium and the 1.5 TGDi Flagship. Yes, the range-topper is called Flagship.
5. Engine Options
As illustrated above, only the Proton X50 Flagship variant gets the 1.5L TGDi engine with high output. This is likely to be the same 3-cylinder turbo engine as the left-hand-drive Geely Binyue that pushes 177hp and 255Nm of troque.
For the Standard, Executive and Premium trim, it’s still a 1.5L 3-cylinder turbo engine but it pushes a lower power output. Unfortunately, Proton hasn’t provided much info on the engines but it is definitely sourced from Geely. All 4 variants are paired with a 7-speed DCT which is similar to the Proton X70 2020.
6. Malaysia-Specific Features
Proton X50 boast two rear air conditioning vents with two USB charging ports and a reverse camera.
If you go for the Flagship variant, you’ll be getting an Advance Driver Assistance System (ADAS) 2.0 feature.
On top of that, your personal Proton assistant in the car will be the voice of a woman, instead of a man in the Proton X70.
Speaking of the Proton assistant…
7. Proton App Is More Powerful
For the Proton X50, you will be getting an 8-inch or 10-inch infotainment heads up unit, and Proton has updated the GKUI to make it faster and more efficient.
The infotainment system is now powered by the new E01 Quad-core chip, which Proton says is five times faster in computing performance, 33 per cent faster in boot up speed and a whopping 67 per cent faster in navigation app loading time.
To take advantage of the new GKUI, Proton has also upgraded the Proton Link app, letting you connect your smartphone to your new Proton X50 to perform several cool functions.
For example, Proton demonstrated during the media preview event that the Proton Link app can be used to start the car and turn on its air-conditioning system.
This is especially useful in Malaysia, as you can now make sure that the car is cool enough for you when you step into it.
8. Proton X50 Interior & Features
The Proton X50 shares its entire interior cabin layout with the Geely Coolray, which already is a tech-savvy place, to begin with. The overall layout looks super cool, with a lot of design bits appearing to be a bit ahead of today’s generation cars.
The driver’s cockpit looks quite futuristic, thanks to a wide and flat bottom multi-functional steering wheel as well as a trapezoidal-shaped full TFT colored instrument console with a rounded upper edge. The center console of the dashboard looks swanky, thanks to a simple but elegantly shaped rectangular touchscreen infotainment system, as well as two protruding out rectangular AC vents below them.
The middle layer of the dashboard looks neat with its contrasting silver finish, with attractive looking AC vents on either ends. The upper layer of the dashboard is finished in soft-touch red fabric, while the lower one is treated in an all-black finish. The cabin is armed with the latest features like a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree around-view camera, powered and ventilated front seats, and more.
9. X50 Exterior
Save for the badging, there is nothing on the Proton X50 which differentiates it from the Geely Coolray. The Proton SUV is exactly the same vehicle as its Chinese counterpart, which is not a bad thing actually, considering that the Geely Coolray is already a good thing, to begin with.
At the front, the Proton X50 comes with an angular grille with a flat upper edge and tapered side and lower edges. The grille is flanked with angular headlamps which do get double LED projector headlamps with L-shaped twin daytime running LEDs surrounding the projectors. To add in a dash of style, the X50 has been adorned with sporty chin spoilers and fog lamp inserts on the front bumper.
The side profile of the Proton X50 is a good mix of new and traditional design elements, with the heighted stance and elevated ground clearance of a traditional SUV and a sloping bonnet of a modern crossover. To add some macho appeal to the design, the Proton X50 gets slightly squared front and rear fenders, however, the wheel arches are in a traditional rounded form, with tough-looking wheel arch molding running over them as well as the bottom of the doors. The sharp uprising kink in the C-pillar adds some more visual drama to the design.
At the back, the Proton X50 again retains the original design of the Geely Coolray in its exact form, with a curved character line joining the horizontally stretched trapezoidal LED tail lamps. The wheel arch molding of the sideways extends here in the form of a tough-looking bumper cladding.
10. Proton X50 Ride & Handling
The Geely Coolray drives like a typical crossover, with a sorted ride and handling balance as compared to the traditional ladder on frame SUVs. There is a planted feel in its suspension setup, which makes it a decent car to drive. However, the light-weighted steering setup, which makes city driving quite smooth, is not too involving on long stretches and corners.
