14 Out Of 15 Multiracial DAP Johor Elected Committee Are All Won By Chinese Candidates

Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong retained his position at the state party elections today, which saw his team winning 10 of the 15 committee seats and then sweeping the leadership portfolios.

Meanwhile, his challenger, Skudai assemblyperson Tan Hong Pin, failed to make the cut after coming in just short in the 16th position. Tan had denied plotting against Liew.

Liew came in third place in the party polls, while Bakri MP Yeo Bee Yin secured the most votes.

Liew Chin Tong has retained the Johor DAP chairmanship for the fourth straight term following the party’s state convention.

The decision was announced by Convention Speaker and Rasah MP Cha Kee Chin after a closed-door meeting involving the 15 newly elected committee members.

The elected Johor DAP committee members are:

Yeo Bee Yin
Teo Nie Ching
Liew Chin Tong
Chen Kah Eng
Wong Shu Qi
Liow Cai Tung
Gan Peck Cheng
Tee Boon Tsong
Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali
Ng Yak Howe
Yeo Tung Siong
Tan Chen Choon
Lim Eng Guan
Boo Cheng Hau
Pang Hok Liong

Following the election, a subsequent poll among the 15 committee members saw Liew retaining his position as Johor DAP chief, with Teo as his deputy.

According to a source, most of those elected to the committee are aligned to party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

“The results of state party elections, like in Penang, Perak, Kedah and Negeri Sembilan, have shown one thing — that Guan Eng is still in charge,” said the source.

Another source said that the easy win by Liew and his team could be attributed to party stalwart Lim Kit Siang, who is said to have made many visits to Johor to campaign for him. Kit Siang’s recent statements had called for the current leadership to be retained.

“The party grassroots, comprising many older members, have a soft spot for Kit Siang and they tend to give him face when it comes to party matters,” said the source.

Calling it a “workhorse committee”, Liew said DAP would be steadfast in upholding the five working goals listed in its proposed plans for GE15.

Liew said among the goals were strengthening itself as a multiracial party and transforming the party from “a grocery store to a hypermarket”, in reference to the surge in Johor DAP membership.

The convention was attended by 905 delegates from 210 branches across the state.
