Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo will go down in history as the only two players to win the Fifa Ballon D’or after the award was established 6 years ago in 2010 as part of a 13 million deal. Only Messi and Ronaldo dominated the award with Messi winning a total of 5 awards and Ronaldo winning twice.
France football, the magazine has ended its partnership with Fifa , this automatically leads to top players to compete for 2 different awards, the Ballon D’or and the Fifa world player of the year. Former Ac Milan and Real Madrid midfielder, Ricardo Kaka is the last ever player to claim both player of the year award and the Ballon D’or award before Messi and Ronaldo in 2007.
The new rules made by the France football has seen that the amount of Ballon D’or shortlist will increase from 23 to 30. The top 3 finalist for the award will no longer be announced before the award is presented.
One of the interesting thing that was applied in the rule is that the rule will be reverted completely to journalist. This means that coaches and captains will taken out of the vote. If this principle applies since the Fifa Ballon D’or was established in 2010,Messi and Ronaldo will no be dominating the award but instead Wesley Sneijder could have won it in 2010 and Ribery in 2013.
Lastly, the announcement of the Ballon D’or winner will be announced before the end of the year. For the past 6 years, the award is presented on January. The winner of the award will be named at a gala event in January.
