Conviction of UMNO Leaders Between Now And August Will Happen Following The Declaration of Emergency

A sociopolitical analyst predicts the likely conviction of Umno leaders who are facing trial between now and August following the declaration of emergency on Tuesday.

Universiti Malaya’s Awang Azman Pawi said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s remarks that the courts will continue to function during this period shows he wants the trials of Umno leaders to be resolved.

“Certainly, many are expected to be convicted during this period,” he told FMT.

Six Umno leaders who are also MPs are either currently facing trial or appealing convictions, including Najib Razak, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Ahmad Maslan, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Azeez Abdul Rahim and Bung Moktar Radin.

Awang Azman said the declaration of emergency will also give Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN) more time in power as parliament has been suspended and a general election cannot be held.

He also believed that PN had been “saved” from defeat in an election, after the government’s apparent failure to manage the pandemic to the point it needed to implement another movement control order and request for an emergency.

Meanwhile, former Universiti Teknologi Malaysia lecturer Azmi Hassan said Muhyiddin does not need to be apologetic for seeking an emergency and that the people will understand the need for it because of the worsening Covid-19 situation.

He said the emergency will give the government an opportunity to administer the country because all this while it has been disturbed and the government cannot focus 100% on addressing the pandemic.
