Following the death of Gerik MP Hasbullah Osman, DAP’s Lim Guan Eng said parties opposed to Umno should not contest the by-election, which would allow the party to retain the seat unopposed.
In a statement, the DAP secretary-general and Bagan MP said this is considering the risks associated with an election given the country is currently dealing with a third wave of Covid-19 infections.
“Public safety should come first and take priority over politicking and electioneering. The public cannot forget the spike in Covid-19 infections after Sabah was forced to conduct its elections.
“There should be a pause to political electioneering until the danger and risks posed by Covid-19 are over.”
Lim also extended his condolences to Hasbullah’s family, and recognised his contributions as an MP over his two terms despite being on opposite sides of the political divide.
Hasbullah died yesterday, reportedly after a heart attack, at his wife’s hometown in Raub, Pahang.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said on Facebook that “as a political secretary, he (Hasbullah) had played a major role in shaping my political journey, a service that I greatly appreciate to this day. We shared many memories. His passing is a great loss to me.”
Hasbullah had served as a political secretary to Muhyiddin when he was the deputy prime minister in 2009.
