DAP Lim Kit Siang : I Will Quit Politics & Not Contest In The 15th GE If Anwar Ibrahim Not Given The Prime Minister Post

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang told Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan today that he was willing to bet his political career on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s pledge that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be the next prime minister.

In a statement today, the Iskandar Puteri MP said that the process will also go on smoothly, without the need to call for fresh elections, and gave Mohamad two days to take up his challenge.

Lim promised to retire from politics, and not contest in the 15th general election, if Mohamad wins the bet.

“At the PBS Sandakan by-election ceramah last night, the Umno acting president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will not keep his promise of passing on the prime minister’s post to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and that he will sooner dissolve Parliament and call for fresh elections instead.

“I have more confidence in (Dr) Mahathir and I am prepared to have a wager with Mohamad that (Dr)Mahathir will honour the Pakatan Harapan commitment to pass the prime minister’s post to Anwar.

“If Mahathir does not pass the Prime Minister’s post to Anwar and instead dissolve Parliament to call for early 15th General Elections, I will retire from politics and will not contest in the 15th General Election,” Lim said.

Lim also challenged Mohamad to do the same, if the former wins the bet.

“Let us give Mohamad two days to decide whether to accept this wager with me,” he added.

In his campaign speech at Sandakan yesterday, Mohamad claimed that Dr Mahathir will not keep his promise of passing on the prime minister’s post to Anwar even after two years.

The Rantau state assemblyman said he was familiar with Dr Mahathir’s character and from what he knows, the latter will not relinquish the post to Anwar.

“I’ve worked with the grandpa for a long time. Trust me, I know the man; he won’t give it up,” he told a ceramah in Bandar Letat Jaya here today.

“Instead, when the time is up in two years, he will sooner dissolve Parliament and call for fresh elections instead,” he said, adding that the election will be called as soon as the end of next year.

Tok Mat asks Kit Siang if he will quit politics since Dr M did not give PM post to Anwar

Recalling DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang’s ‘quit’ dare on May 10, 2019 during the Sandakan by-election, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan today asked why Lim has not stepped down from politics.

Mohamad, who is popularly known as Tok Mat, raised this question as he recalled Lim’s willingness to bet his political career on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s pledge that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be the next prime minister.

He said it has been two years since the pledge was made by Dr Mahathir, and instead of becoming prime minister Anwar has returned as leader of the Opposition bloc and Lim as an Opposition MP in Parliament.

“Lim made the bet in wake of my statement in which I said that I was not sure if Dr Mahathir will fulfill his promise to resign as the prime minister and pass it on to Anwar after two years.

“Lim who said he trusted Dr Mahathir made a bet that he would retire from politics and will not contest in the 15th General Election (GE15) if Dr Mahathir does not fulfil his promise.

Mohamad pointed out that Lim’s predictions has derailed.

“Lim has promised to step down from politics many times, but these promises were never fulfilled. He continues to contest in the election as if DAP would have no direction without his presence,” he said.

Mohamad added that he has given up on Lim’s bets since the latter’s political journey has always been painted by bets, false promises and failures.

Lim had in 2019 said he has more confidence in Dr Mahathir and he was prepared to have a wager with Mohamad that Dr Mahathir will honour the Pakatan Harapan commitment to pass the prime minister’s post to Anwar.

He had said that if Dr Mahathir does not pass the prime M-minister’s post to Anwar and instead dissolve Parliament to call for early GE15, he will retire from politics and will not contest in the general election.

Lim also challenged Mohamad to do the same, if the former wins the bet.

In a campaign speech at Sandakan in May 2019, Mohamad claimed that Dr Mahathir will not keep his promise of passing on the prime minister’s post to Anwar even after two years.

The Rantau state assemblyman said he was familiar with Dr Mahathir’s character and from what he knows, the latter will not relinquish the post to Anwar.

Petition asking Kit Siang to quit politics gaining traction

An online petition demanding that DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang honour his words and quit politics following the failure of PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to become prime minister has gained over 57 000 signatories in two days.

The petition was started by one Ahmad Abdul at change.org after he got sick and tired of empty promises spewed by politicians who he believes have never any intention of keeping them.

At the time of writing, 24,151 have signed said petition and news on it reported by Chinese daily, China Press.

“We refused to be taken for a ride anymore. Therefore Malaysians demand Lim Kit Siang to honour his own promise to retire should Tun [Dr] Mahathir Mohamad did not handover the post to Anwar Ibrahim,” wrote Ahmad.

Lim had on May 10 last year bet his political career on Anwar’s rise as PM in a bid to lend credence to Mahathir’s guarantee that Anwar would succeed him but this was foiled by a political crisis three months ago.

“If Mahathir does not pass the PM post to Anwar and instead dissolve Parliament to call for early elections, I will retire from politics and will not contest in it,” vowed Lim in a statement.

The Pakatan government collapsed in February after Pribumi Bersatu quit the coalition and Mahathir’s resignation as PM followed.

Mahathir, however, also offered himself for the PM post – via a special and non-electoral arrangement initiated by the Yang diPertuan Agong – alongside Anwar and Pribumi Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin was ultimately selected by the Agong to be the PM and formed the government with Umno, PAS, MCA, MIC and several PKR MPs who had either quit the party or were sacked.
