UPDATE: Teen Killed By Falling Chair Laid To Rest, Many Showed Up To Pay Their Final Respect

Following the death of 15-year-old S. Satiswaran, who died immediately after getting struck by an office chair that was believed to be thrown from the 21st floor of the Sri Pantai Public Housing’s Block 102 in Pantai Dalam on Monday, January 15.

The family of the young teen was left inconsolable over the sudden loss of their youngest son.

It is understood that the victim was accompanying his mother, 45-year-old S. Kasthurivai, who had just finished grocery shopping.

She told Malay Mail Online,

“Around 7.30pm yesterday I was with three other friends gathering signatures on the 11th floor, when we heard a loud crash followed by screaming. Fearing the worst, we rushed downstairs to the main lobby facing the playground.”

There they found Satiswaran’s lifeless body lying on the ground covered in blood as his mother knelt beside him sobbing.

According to Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazin, the case was initially investigated under Section 304a of the Penal Code for causing death by negligence, but police are now investigating the death of Satiswaran as murder.

Police have interviewed 31 people and five of them have had their DNA samples taken for analysis, It is learned that the five were residents who had a lot of furniture in their apartment.

Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Rusdi Md Isa said the five are not suspects.

“We will be taking more samples from other witnesses. This also does not mean that there was any DNA on the chair. Let us investigate.”

The police are still waiting for the post-mortem results.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has identified 13 priority Seri Pantai People’s Housing Project (PPR) and public housing for civil servants (PPA) projects where concrete slabs will be built over walkways, next to the buildings, to protect residents from falling objects.

Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Dr. Loga Bala Mohan said they were already in talks with a contractor to start work as soon as possible.

“A safety net will be installed as a temporary measure in some areas pending the permanent concrete slabs.”

Yesterday, January 18, about 300 people, including friends, schoolmates, and relatives of Satiswaran gathered at the narrow corridor to attend the funeral of the teen. Some turned up crying and wailing at the funeral which started at around 10 am at the family’s unit on the 16th floor.

Among the crowd was the victim’s mother who looked inconsolable as Satiswaran’s body was taken away in a hearse. Friends and relatives of the SMK La Salle schoolboy looked on as the final rites were performed.

The boy’s body was taken away in a coffin at 2.20 pm borne by his friends and family members, to be laid to rest at the MBPJ Damansara Hindu Cemetery at about 4 pm.

One of the residents only wished to be known as Ganesan, 60, who attended the funeral told The Star,

“There is junk everywhere. People just leave trash and discarded furniture around.

“We pay RM48 monthly for maintenance but things like the elevators break down regularly and old people like me are forced to use the stairs.”

The victim’s 18-year-old brother, S. Yogeswaran also shared the same sentiment.

“I don’t want this to happen to anyone or their brother. Something needs to be done to make sure this does not recur.”
