Khairy Jamaluddin dropped a broad hint today that Cabinet members from Umno will not resign from their posts in August, saying that such calls by leaders were not binding.
The science, technology and innovation minister said he would abide by Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan’s statement which did not specify any particular date, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“It was ‘Taj Mahal’ who mentioned August,” he said referring to Umno election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.
“But we only need to heed the secretary-general’s directive,” the Malay daily quoted him as saying.
Earlier this month, Tajuddin said Umno members serving as ministers, deputy ministers and government-linked company chairmen would all quit their positions by August.
In an interview with FMT, he affirmed the decision Umno made at its general assembly last month, that it would withdraw its support for the Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government in August if the prime minister fails to dissolve Parliament by then.
The emergency proclamation which has been in force since Jan 12 is scheduled to end on Aug 1.
Umno currently forms the largest bloc in the current administration, which comprises PN, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.
In January, Khairy said he would quit the government if instructed to do so by the party’s Supreme Council.
