10 Things You Should Know About The Upcoming SEA Games

Malaysians are always super united when it comes to sports, especially sports like badminton and football. It’s one of the best times to head to a mamak and just gather among the crowd and cheer together. It’s a great feeling!

As you know, the SEA Games is coming soon and it will be hosted in Malaysia! It’s one of the biggest events to host and also a big year for Malaysia. The upcoming highlights of this event includes our 60th Independence Day and  Malaysia will be hosting both 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) and the 9th ASEAN Para Games. They’re both branded together as Kuala Lumpur 2017 (KL2017).

So we are just 7 days away from the SEA Games, and it’s time we prep you guys with some interesting facts about it that you should know.

1. It will be happening on the 19 – 30 August 2017. The ASEAN Para Games will be held from 17 – 23 September 2017

2. There will be an opening and closing ceremony which will be held at the newly-upgraded Bukit Jalil National Stadium. 

3. Malaysia has won in the SEA Games with a total of 111 golds in 32 sports the last time they hosted the Games in 2001. Woah, not bad Malaysia!

4. This will be the sixth time Malaysia is hosting the SEA Games.

5. The theme this year is ‘Rising Together’.

6. There will be an official mascot for the games too, which will be a Malayan tiger named Rimau, that is an abbreviation of the Games core values such as Respect, Integrity, Move, Attitude and Unity.

7. 405 events out of 38 sports will be held during the SEA Games, and they have also introduced 5 new categories to debut which are bridge, cricket, ice hockey, ice skating (which includes figure skating and short-track speed skating) and Tarung Derajat. You can check it out here.

8. About 8,000 athletes and officials from 11 countries are expected to participate in the 2017 SEA Games.

9. The medals, torch and baton are designed by Royal Selangor. Wow, classy!

10. All the events will be held in Kuala Lumpur except for sailing (Langkawi) and equestrian (Terengganu) and tickets are already on sale. You can buy it here.
