- Public started queuing up for the opening as early as 5:30am
- The second IKEA ever in Malaysia
- The BIGGEST IKEA
If you are thinking of ‘Getting Cheras’ to Ikea Cheras, think again. Malaysia’s newest IKEA has been flooded with shoppers looking for a good deal since its doors first opened today.
But if you are thinking of getting there, we’d suggest you hold the thought. It seems that Malaysian shoppers are very excited for the new Ikea in Cheras, we heard from The Edge Property that the public had started queuing up for the opening as early as 5:30am. Seriously, you don’t want to be stuck there, just look at the pictures below!
If you go to Ikea Cheras’ FB group, you’ll find complaints from many about the two hour traffic hold-up and lack of parking due to an overwhelming number of people flocking to get into the furniture mall. But Ikea Cheras offers free shuttle buses from LRT stations too as they had targeted a crowd of 60,000 shoppers on its first day.
The second IKEA ever in Malaysia (the other being in Damansara), is also the BIGGEST IKEA ever opened in the country. Located in Jalan Cochrane in Cheras, the opening was officiated by the Ambassador of Sweden (if you haven’t noticed Ikea is from Sweden) His Excellency Bengt G Carlsson, and was attended by 800 guests.
20% bigger than IKEA Damansara, it features 56 showrooms with over 8,500 products; it also has 1,700 parking bays and can seat up to 780 in their restaurant, although our editors are still not convinced that these are enough.
IKEA also planned to open stores in Sabah and Sarawak, Mike King said the company was always looking at expanding its business but has not made any decisions yet. IKEA is currently searching for locations to set up stores in Johor and Penang. Mike King is the current retail director of IKEA Malaysia, IKEA Singapore and IKEA Thailand.
With the opening of IKEA Cheras, IKEA would have five stores in Southeast Asia, with two in Malaysia, two in Singapore and one in Thailand.
