After Samantha Katie James represented the country as Miss Universe Malaysia 2017, this year, Jane Teoh Jun was crowned as the new representative.
Jane is a 20-year-old accounting and finance student and part-time model from Penangite. She was presented by her predecessor Samantha with the shiny crown and esteemed sash at a Gala dinner held at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
The ballroom erupted in cheers at the moment she was crowned.
“I want to be remembered as a woman who made a difference. My wish as Miss Universe Malaysia is to spread my philanthropic work,” said Jane.
The 178cm-tall part-time model, who was also named Miss Online Personality, beat 16 other contestants and won herself a chance to represent the country at the Miss Universe 2018 pageant.
Upon winning the title, she was awarded a full education scholarship from HELP University, RM150,000 sponsored prizes and RM50,000 cash!
“I feel very, very excited and surprised because I never expected to win. I was just hoping for the best and prepared for the worst,” Jane said when commenting on her win.
“It’s our dream that this pageant can inspire young girls to use this stage to achieve greater things and to be positive role models,” said Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (Mumo) national director Datin Elaine Daly at the grand finale event.
The director explained that the theme Beauty Beyond You for the beauty pageant this year is aimed to break down the stereotype of what a beauty pageant is and instead show that it can be a platform for contestants to be inspired, empowered and to become leaders.
Actor Stephen Rahman-Hughes and Miss Universe Malaysia 2012, Kimberley Leggett hosted the night elegantly with no hiccups.
Other than spectacular finalists walking up the stage in stunning gowns and swimwear, the evening was also celebrated with many performances such as dances from Nasty Rock Crew, a duet by Dasha Logan and Yazmin Aziz, as well as vocal performances by Ushera and Aqeesh Aleya.
The night ended with singer-songwriter Yuna mesmerizing the guests with her amazing voice.
