Malaysian Lecturer In Trouble For Making Racist Comments About Indian Students During Class

Lalitha Sudeshna, a student from University of Malaya demanded an apology from her lecturer, Prof. Dr. Norlidah for routinely making racist remarks about Indians during class.  Her post on Facebook quickly went viral and ignited a flurry of comments from angry netizens.

Prof. Dr. Norlidah

This is what Lalitha posted on her Facebook:

17th February 2017 at 3.05 PM
Research in Curriculum Development by Prof Dr Norlidah at Faculty of Education

“I would like to lodge a complain upon your lecturer, Prof. Dr. Norlidah. My friend Rinishah and I rushed to class taking time off from work, as we step into the class we greeted Prof Norlidah and proceeded walking towards our seats. As we were about to sit, she abruptly said ‘India, saya tak suka India duduk bersama-sama. Jangan bawa budaya UNITAR kesini. India duduk sama-sama lepas itu akan tiru assignment dan plagiarise. Saya kenal India.’ she then continued saying to me, ‘You, baju merah, duduk depan sekarang.’ subsequently said to my friend ‘you duduk sana’. Prof Norlidah further said, ‘Saya akan pastikan awak dan kawan awak tak akan dapat kumpulan sama untuk buat assignment. Saya tahu India macam mana.’

At this time, I was infuriated by her racist remarks towards me and my friend; I did NOT expect this from a well-educated person especially a person whose title is ’Professor’. She did not stop, she was merciless as she proceeded to insult other indian students. How would the wawasan 2020 be fulfilled if we have educators like this in ’Malaysia’s Top Public University’?

She went on defending her atrocious behaviour by confessing that this is her style and proceeded to encourage student to not promote UM to anyone else as she prefers her class to be smaller in number.

This wasn’t first time we had experienced this lowly behaviour of hers;on our orientation day, we met Prof Norlidah along with other two possible lecturers for a session with the faculty. Her first words were indeed hurtful and demotivating ‘Do you think you can do Masters with just 2 years experience? You and your friends can never graduate together, I challenge you. You do your business and I will do my business.’ her words crushed our eager selves who thirsted for knowledge.

I’ve never been more insulted in my life before until recently by your lecturer. Never did I came across someone with a PhD who could act despicably rude. It is a shame that such lecturer/former student hail from “Malaysia’s Top Public University”. It is important to remember that respect does not come with papers and titles but attitude. She lost the respect before gaining one. Such arrogance and racism from someone who should be an inspiration.

Let me remind you that we are paying to be here, she has no rights to insult us as such. Actions could be taken. She had hurt me and my friend emotionally.
I demand for an apology from her for the damage she had done to my reputation. If no action is taken from your side, I will not hesitate to bring this matter to the media.”

Malaysia is a country so full of diversity yet we are fraught with fights about race and religion! It’s about time we stopped fighting and started appreciating everyone, no matter their background or what the colour of their skin is. There should be no divide between the races because we are essentially, one human race!

It is pretty shocking to hear such awful racist comments coming from a highly educated person like her. She definitely brought shame to University of Malaya!

What you guys think about this? Will she apologize?

Well, lets just wait and see what happens next.

Easy for you to say, if it was in reverse action would be taken in immediately and if anyone else were to say there is 2 sides to a story there would be hundreds shooting down that statement.

Some people, you can take them out from the kampung but never the kampung out of them. No matter how educated they are. And in this case, most probably too much education fucked her (the lecturer) up.

For all we know she got her Phd on a platter. That is how many third world government sponsored students get their degrees from top Western Universities. We call that attendance degees.

So tell me how would you feel when someone judge you like they know everything about you based on your race and color? She don’t have the right to say that. Just because she knew something someone from that particular race, it doesn’t mean everyone behaves like that. Her remarks show how unethical she is. She is not qualified to be a teacher when she herself shows uneducated thinking. Racism are everywhere but that is a place to learn not shoot down other people by stereotyping those who comes to learn.

You can say that this is “tough love”, but it makes no sense. Its tough love if it somehow makes you better – a coach telling you to run 10 more rounds, or a teacher giving you extar assignments.

But how can someone be less Indian (or Malay, or Chinese)? The professor racially presumes she would plagiarise based on her ethnicity – what does that say of her intelligence?

Her action, or as she said it ‘her style’, is just racism thinly dressed as ‘plain-speaking’. Malaysians are fine that she speaks her mind, what we’re not fine with is that she’s racist underneath her titles and her qualifications.

If that is the result of plain-speaking, I would suggest she takes up another job where she doesnt speak so much.

A disgrace that this lecturer is in the Higher Education System. With such a racist attitude and a possible further backlash of marking the students who complained about her, why would any university/college/school hire het?

The nature of garbage is such that you need not stir it since it will eventually give itself away when it emits foul odor. These bigots have no sense of gratitude to the many people of other races including Indians who had nurtured her this far. Racism turns rational human beings into dangerous creatures that incite hate and threaten to tear apart the social fabric of our Malaysian civil society. Let’s pray that the Almighty sends these few wayward individuals some divine guidance so that they can realise their rightful place and fated role in our human-centred ecosystem.

First of all, you seriously need to improve your English.

You might want to reconsider and retract your statement simply because it is “the-common-things-happening-today” and get to play the victim.

If go by your logic of thought, Islamic terrorism is a “common-thing-happening-today”, does it mean I can go around and say all Islam are a terrorist and should be shot on sight?

Your idea of tolerant seems more like “I can insult you because it’s a common thing happening nowadays but you cannot insult me cause that will be racist and discrimination”.

Not going to judge how shallow you are but you don’t paint everyone with the same brush because they are affiliated with a particular religion or race. Not everyone from Muslim or any other religious affiliation are so called “extremely tolerant”. There will always be some bad apples in the basket.

oohh dear. Racism is putting his ugly head out again. But not from an educated professor in a university. What was she thinking when she spoke those horrible remarks? Malaysia is such a beautiful country. Why make such dreadful remarks n make it ugly.? Every individual is smart in thier own she threatened by that?

I feel like I should share a few of my opinion. First off, deliberate racism in any form should not be tolerated. From an ethical standpoint, this is not tolerable. Secondly, she has a PhD. She should hold herself with the appropriate conduct. She cannot use the excuse that this is her “style” of conduct. Finally, as a Malaysian myself, I know that we have an infamous reputation when other countries see us. Universities, where a multitude of multicultural and international students come together to learn and to experience the Malaysian “hospitality” is a good opportunity to show the world that we are not all racist bigots. She had no idea what an important role she had in representing her country and she blew it irresponsibly.

This the product of protectionism , special privilege for Malay , claim the country to be theirs, claim Bahasa Malaysia to be theirs! Please understand, almost 80% of Bahasa Melayu originated from Sanskrit, Hindu, Chinese and many others.
This is how they behave, taught to hate, think that they are superior than others! This attitude do not promote unity! She and many others had been incited by their masters to hate, and being racist! These people cannot help Malaysia grow to become a strong and united nation!

Most of the comments here are stinked of racism! What the prof did is horrible! End of story! But for others to make remarks on her race, her race’s so called priviledges etc are like enticing more racism. If you want to get angry just be angry with the prof not the whole bangsa laaa… btw, prof, u better apologize, that superior-than-others attitude made your race looks bad!!! Come on, this is 1Malaysia laaa! We got no time for racism! I love my indian friends, they are the best!

To be very frank I think her Professor ship degree must be cheated from other races. Malay had been given privilege in all sectors and turning our most of them below international standard in behavior and qualification.
If given fair judgement and mark, they are below standard and Malaysia will always be having racial tension because the government are so corrupted, afraid to be fair and just to all races. They were so afraid that if Malay become too well educated and talent then the corrupted Ministers will lose their post. Wake up, you have to allow Malay to fight on fair ground, so they will understand what is life and not spoon feed.

Sorry to see that she has a phd but does not even know how to differentiate a country from a race. As far as I could recall there’s no such thing as a ‘INDIA’ race nor can we can associate ourselves with INDIA-only our great-great/great or grandparents came from India. Both Lalitha and Rinisha are born Malaysians-therefore, they should be acknowledged as a Tamil, Telungu or a Malayelee etc. Now, that’s cleared, lets focus on our dear so called prof….if it is judged true as to what is claimed by Lalitha then our dear prof needs to do a real system overhall to recalibrate her entire system to the true nature of living as 1MALAYSIA or as a true muslim-who would not utter out such words to degrade others. Our government needs to do a system check on all teachers, lecturers and profs to make sure we have a quality lot who are truly capable of instilling the true Malaysian spirit from primary to the tertiary level.Such degrading remarks are not the first time we hear, there have been countless of time such kind of insensitive remarks been made by teachers and lecturers but very little has been done. I hope this time this matter will be dealt in a more appropriate and serious manner…

It is interesting that P Kamalanathan’s response to do something about this disgraceful racist behaviour is about the good name and reputation of UM, and not the two girls who were victimised.
