The difference lies in the time it happened. This matters because people often bypass the fact that Najib’s corruption is a contemporary problem while Mahathir’s corruption happened several decades ago. If a naughty teen bullies his classmates, we don’t compare him to his father, even if his father used to be a bully also. We recognise that the teen is the problem and correspondingly we deal with him somehow. In the case of Mahathir and Najib, Mahathir’s corruption occurred a long time ago. It’s a foregone case that we can do nothing about nor is it necessary to deal with it because it is not causing any problems currently. Najib’s corruption is currently causing damage and efforts must be done to stop the damage. It is necessary to deal with it right now. If we leave it unattended, more damage will be done so why ignore it when we can curb it instead? – Suffi Ismail
