PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy, Mohamed Azmin Ali, are in the final dash of their race to become the next prime minister, according to a leader of the party who asked for anonymity.
If it were a 100m race, they would now be at the 80m mark, he told FMT.
The source, who is in Anwar’s camp, said the president’s supporters would insist on Azmin’s resignation from his ministerial post if police investigations resulted in former PKR Santubong Youth chief Haziq Ali’s arraignment on a charge of sodomy.
Haziq is in police remand until tomorrow. He is under investigation over sex video clips that he said featured himself and Azmin, who has denied the allegation.
Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said yesterday that Cybersecurity Malaysia had found the clips to be authentic but could not ascertain whether Azmin was one of the men in the footage.
“If Haziq is charged, we will pressure Azmin to resign as it will show that Haziq’s claim of him being with the minister is true,” said the source.
Another PKR leader, an Azmin supporter, said it was now an “all-out war” between the president and his deputy.
He said not all of the PKR leaders who criticised Anwar in a statement released yesterday were pro-Azmin.
He was referring to a statement signed by 23 PKR central committee members and four MPs. The statement said Anwar should not have called for Azmin’s resignation and should stop making divisive statements.
“We understand some of the politicians who signed their support for Azmin may still be supporting Anwar,” said the pro-Azmin source.
“They will go with whoever seems to be stronger.”
He said Azmin’s camp would campaign for more support against gutter politics.
