Malaysian mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying have defeated the China pair of Xu Chen and Ma Jin in straight sets 21-12, 21-19 to become the first mixed doubles pair from Malaysia to win an Olympic medal.
Chan and Goh took only 45 minutes to bring down the Chinese pair and will meet Indonesia pair of Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad in the finals which will be played at 11:30pm Malaysian time. Liliyana and Tontowi defeated their Chinese opponent Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei in straight sets 21-16, 21-15.
The win was also the second major achievement by the Malaysian badminton team in Rio on Monday night, after the top men’s doubles pair of Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong stunned the world number one pair of Lee Yong Dae and Yoon Yeon Seong from South Korea to qualify for the men’s doubles semifinals. The Malaysians marched into the semis with a 17-21, 21-18, 21-19 win in 86 minutes.
