The Health Ministry has recently issued a warning to the public and urged everyone heat a milk before drinking it. This method is applied to prevent bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis.
It is believed that raw dairy products such as cow and goat milk contains harmful bacteria such as Mycobacterium bovis and Brucella according to Health director-general Datuk Noor Hisham Abdullah.
“The ministry is aware that there are sales of ready-to-drink raw milk which have not undergone heat treatment.”
“We received information that certain quarters have been promoting new milk without heat treatment by stating that ‘cold chain control’ is maintained and that the milk is safe to drink.”
“The ministry would like to stress that raw milk which has not undergone heat treatment such as boiling and pasteurisation has been linked to infections such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome,as the liquid contains the MERS-CoV virus. The diseases can be fatal.” Datuk Noor Hisham Abdullah said.
He also states that the sales raw of raw milk without heat treatment is an offence under Regulation 51 (1A), Food Hygiene Regulations 2009, the Food Act 1983, which will starts becoming active from December 1 onwards.
Those who did not obey the law and were involved in selling raw milk without heat treatment will be fined for up to Rm10,000 or prison time for up to five years.
