LIM GUAN ENG MALAYSIA’S DEPARTURE LEVY WILL HURT THE COUNTRY’S TOURISM INDUSTRY

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has also urged the government to reconsider imposing the tax. In a statement released shortly after the bill was passed, IATA regional vice-president for Asia-Pacific Conrad Clifford said the departure levy has the potential to do more harm than good to the Malaysian economy, as it will dampen travel demand.

Based on IATA’s analysis, the introduction of the levy will reduce the number of international air passengers departing Malaysia by up to 835,000 per year, decreasing the aviation sector’s gross domestic product (GDP) contribution by up to US$419 million and see a reduction of up to 5,300 jobs.

In 2017, Malaysia’s aviation sector supported 450,000 jobs and contributed US$10.1 billion to the country’s GDP. The broader tourism sector accounted for 13.4% of GDP, which is significantly supported by air transport, according to IATA.

Departure levy last thing Malaysia’s tourism industry needs

The timing of the levy is also wrong as the global economy is slowing and this will affect the tourism industry.

Foreign tourists are already taxed too much in Malaysia and this will add to the cost of tour packages, said Malaysia Inbound Tourism Association deputy president Mint Leong.

“You need to pay RM10 (S$3.30) every night for hotels, so if you’re visiting Malaysia for five days you’ll need to pay RM50.

Businesses will suffer if tourists decide to skip Malaysia because of the levy.

Bloomberg : Malaysian ringgit is Asia’s worst currency

Ringgit Sees Worst Drop in 18 months After Pakatan Harapan Surprise Win

Malaysia’s currency has been one of the worst in Southeast Asia. The ringgit is now at its lowest level in over two decades.

The depreciation of Malaysia’s national currency, the ringgit, has been going on for awhile. But the ringgit recently dropped to its lowest value in over 17 years.

It was a one-two punch that’s turned the Malaysian ringgit into Asia’s worst performer this month.

FTSE Russell said Monday it may drop Malaysian debt from the FTSE World Government Bond Index because of concern about market liquidity, roiling the nation’s currency and bonds.

Malaysia’s June palm oil inventory falls to 11-month low

“Before this, a tonne (of palm oil) was RM800. Now it is only RM200. What is the problem? Is PH doing work? Is the minister doing work?”

Malaysia’s palm oil inventory shrank for the fourth straight month in June, falling to its lowest level in nearly a year as production fell.

However, potentially feeble demand in the months ahead post-Eid celebration and typically higher output in the second half of the year with a spike in October are likely to weigh on price of the commodity used in everything from snacks to cosmetics, analysts said.

The stockpile in Malaysia, the world’s largest palm oil producer after Indonesia, totaled 2.42 million tons in June, easing from 2.45 million tons in May, the Malaysian Palm Oil Board said in a statement. That was the lowest level since July 2018.

Inventory will probably hover around 2 million tons to 2.1 million tons until year-end, said Public Investment Bank’s Analyst Chong Hoe Leong. “Second-half is always high production season and if exports do not do well, it will put more pressure on price,” he said.

Exports fell 19.4% to 1.38 million tons in June compared with May’s shipment of 1.71 million tons, while output declined 9.2% month-on-month to 1.52 million tons from 1.67 million tons in May.
