Mahathir Into His Last Political Leg?
Aathi Shankar | January 1, 2020
Many Malaysians, millions if one estimates, hope that 2020 will be the last year of Tun Mahathir Mohamad’s political career.
They are just sick, tired and fed up of him.
When Malaysians voted for a change in 2018, they held high hopes for a new system of government that would thwart political manipulations, curb rampant corruption, prohibit abuse of power and avert misuse of the law.
However, two years on after the 14th General Election (GE14), the system of governance remains the same if not become worse.
Governments change hands, lies remain the same indeed.
Malaysians though conveniently forgot that Mahathir, when he was ruling the roost as the 4th Prime Minister (PM4) between 1981 and 2003, was the ultimate protagonist in causing the system to rot.
He was the catalyst to turn topsy turvy a system of governance that was invented and built by the nation’s founding fathers that would fair and just for all.
Mahathir, for instance, holds a world record for amending the country’s constitution upteen times.
He destroyed the independence of judiciary, privatised public enterprises, introduced economic policies based on cronyism and nepotism, accelerated racial discrimination at all levels of government and “corporatised” then ruling party, Umno.
It was during his time as PM4 that money politics reared its ugly head in Umno and country.
Under PM4, Umno transformed from a party of intellectuals, educationists and people who adhere to religious virtues, to a political monster of corrupt businessmen and opportunists.
By definition, Mahathir is the main cause of all ills in Umno and country today.
However, people conveniently side-stepped all his past wrongdoings and rooted for Mahathir to return to power as PM7 in the 14th General Election (GE14).
Many Malaysians thought Mahathir would be only a two-year interim PM7 before PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim takes over as PM8.
Malaysians, who kicked out Barisan Nasional (BN) from the federal government in GE14 on May 9, 2018, somehow still believe that Anwar will take over in 5 months time.
They still hold on to this delusional belief despite been dumbfounded and dismayed by Mahathir’s wicked and malicious scheming, manipulation, wheeling and dealing for past 20 months.
They still believe that the 94-year-old nonagenarian will quit soon because that was what Pakatan Harapan told them during GE14 campaign.
But Mahathir is not going to quit as in May 2020.
Despite the writing on the wall and widespread hatred against his misrule, Mahathir will not relinquish his position.
He has lined up so many strategies, hidden and unhidden, to execute his grand plan to overstay his welcome.
Mahathir has a big ego and sheer arrogance.
He believes that only he was qualified to lead Malaysia.
His machinery is already working overtime for past few years to ensure that all his rivals were either jailed or tamed into obvilion.
He now on a man-hunt to handpick a politician who he believe can continue and sustain his legacy.
To Mahathir however, he is a legend and Malaysians must maintain his legacy forever and ever.
But he faces certain obstacles in forms of Anwar, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to achieve his ambition.
Thus, the trio face a prospect of imprisonment through frivolous charges.
It’s an open secret that Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein had been engaged to lure as many Umno MPs to join Mahathir in a backdoor government.
It was to actualise Mahathir’s plot to break away from current PH regime, which also includes PKR, DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (PAN), and form a new federal ruling coalition government.
Mahathir’s aspired new government will exclude the DAP, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s faction of PKR and PAN.
Mahathir hopes to secure support of 41 BN MPs, 18 PAS MPs, 18 MPs from Gabungan Parti-Parti Sarawak (GPS), 3 from Gabungan Bersatu Sabah and 9 from Parti Warisan headed by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
With his own party PPBM’s 25 MPs and 15 or more MPs expected from Azmin’s faction of PKR, Mahathir hopes to form a new ruling regime with a strong majority and continue his political foray as PM7.
If he succeeds on this grand plan in next few months, the 94-year-old nonagenarian will crush Anwar’s prolonged ambition to become PM8.
In the process, Mahathir hopes to control of Umno’s wealth under his PPBM.
Mahathir’s plot, if succeeds, will toll the death knell on Umno.
It will cripple Umno financially and leave the 63-year-old grand old party to die alone a pauper.
Hishammuddin is said to be a central figure in brokering this deal for Mahathir.
Speculations have rife that Hishammuddin had managed to turnover Ahmad Zahid.
All these deals would sideline Najib, isolating the former premier to fight alone for his political survival and liberty.
Many Umno MPs are said to be clamouring for Mahathir to join the backdoor government.
This is the state of Umno’s integrity, moral and dignity today.
These Umno MPs can’t live life without the perks and benefits of a government.
It was Mahathir who caused the downfall of Umno and BN in GE14.
But the unashamed and disgusting Umno MPs are scrambling to save Mahathir’s regime.
They should actually let Mahathir’s regime to fry.
At the moment, the political momentum is with BN not Pakatan, largely due to the ever growing popularity of Najib as ‘Bossku’.
Let the Parliament be dissolved, which is expected to be soon if Umno MPs did not give the lifeline to Mahathir.
The nation shall have a snap GE15 and allow the people, not Mahathir or any other person, to decide the next federal government.
