Using the “people nearby” function on WeChat, users can look up for people in their vicinity and chat them up. Prostitutes used this function as a way to get in contact with potential customers, offering sex services ranged from RM150 to RM300, according to The Star.

These girls are touted to be young and sexy, willing to do “anything” for their clients. The English daily also sent in an undercover team, who found that each session would last for 45 minutes and cost RM165 to RM200 including hotel room. For overnight services, the cost was from RM500 to RM700, including room charges. They quoted a college girl named Abby who said locals and even foreign students offered such services, either freelance or through pimps.

The use of the mobile application to solicit sex had not been something new – there had been multiple reports in several countries like Taiwan, Singapore and China where young women were reportedly found offering sexual services in a similar fashion.

The article also reported that police had managed to put a stop to a pair of pimps in Melacca, by detectives who acted as “clients” by engaging in online conversations with the pimps through the WeChat application.

In a press-conference at Banda Hilir police station, DCP Ramli revealed that police managed to rescue three college students aged between 19 and 21 years at a hotel in Ayer Keroh here on Aug 26. He said the two brothers, aged 24 and 26, were also arrested and currently under remand.

“We have seized all the evidence, including condoms, at a hotel used as a base by the pimps involved.
