Going through the immigration checkpoints are already such a hassle and what’s even worse is that if you happen to encounter an extremely unpleasant immigration officer who would go out of their way to make your journey back home even more tiring.
Fitness Model for GQ, Gillian Benjamin recently posted her unwelcoming experience at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Tuesday when she met face-to-face with a verbally rude immigration officer.
She published her Facebook post on Tuesday and it has since garnered over 2,000 shares. Her post shocked and angered many of her followers and Malaysians alike who have encountered similar situations.
When Gillian and her parents both approached the immigration officer at the counter, they were immediately demanded and shouted at by the officer to head to another counter claimed Gillian. Gillian stated, “She was shouting at my parents to go to counter no 31”
“The distance between my parents and her counter is just In front of us! It’s not a distance why should she shout at my parents?” added Gillian. Of course, Gillian stood up for her parents and told the immigration lady to be nicer when speaking to them.
However, when Gillian’s friend, Qhal requested the same thing, the immigration officer shouted back in reply saying that she wasn’t talking to him but to Gillian and her parents instead. (Saya tak cakap kat kamu! Saya cakap kat dorang!)
What’s more absurd is the fact that the immigration officer had the guts to question rudely about his ethnicity as if he wasn’t welcomed here. Gillian stated and claimed that she asked Qhal her friend if he was lost and questioned his ethnicity. (You kenapa? Sesat ke? You orang apa?)
Offended and already annoyed by her rudeness, Qhal stated that he was a local and a Malaysian but the immigration officer rudely replied to him saying, “How would I know? I thought they were Chinese!”
She also commented at Gillian by saying, “Look at the way she’s dressed, how would I know?” (Mana saya tahu! Saya ingat orang Cina! Dia pun pakai macam tu mana saya tahu?)
At this point, Gillian had enough and confronted the officer for being rude to the entire family. She even pointed out to the officer that the way she dresses has nothing to do with being Chinese and that she was clearly being racist against them.
“What does Chinese have to do with the way I dress? A singlet top with shorts? What does Chinese have to do with how you yell at OKU and senior people?” Gillian stated.
The fact that they had uniforms doesn’t mean that they have the permission to be rude with everyone else or even the fact that they are even allowed to be racists against a particular race. The immigration officer even refused to provide Gillian her name when requested.
Comes to show the standards of attitude within the immigration department and how they treat others when no one else is looking. Not to say that all immigration officers are like that but the fact that they are the image and front line of what others see when they come into the country can be very hurtful to the country’s image.
