UPDATE: 11-Year-Old Child Bride Sent Back To Thailand

Following the investigation into the 11-year-old girl who married a 41-year-old Kelantanese man, Che Abdul Karim Che Abdul Hamid, the girl has been sent back to Thailand and she is now in Narathiwat.

According to a Thai source, who is a social activist, the Kelantan state government sent her back on Wednesday, August 8, and the Thai authorities received her and she is now under the care of the Social Department and Human Security Ministry.

He said,

“The ministry is supposed to protect the girl and rehabilitate her. It’s right for the Thai government to take the girl back but they have to have a long-term plan. The girl’s family is poor and no one would care for them.”

While the ministry would shelter her, he said that there was concern that religious bodies might threaten the ministry to let her remain with the man.

“Religious bodies in Thailand are influential and support child marriage.”

The issue surfaced after reports about the man marrying the young Thai girl, Ayu in Gua Musang, Kelantan, went viral on social media in June and drew flak from many parties for allowing child marriage.

The girl’s parents are said to be Thai nationals.

Investigations by the Kelantan Welfare Department found that the marriage took place in Golok, Thailand.

The man was fined a mere RM1,800 by the Gua Musang Syariah Court.

In addition, the order for the girl to leave was sudden and the girl did not even have time to pack as she had to leave immediately.

Good that they’ve sent the girl back, only God knows what the man would’ve done to her if she remained in his house.

What are your thoughts on this?

If the religious department of Kelantan had done their job, the girl could have been sent back.Just because she is a Thai national, the Kelantan religious department was indifferent. Just imagine if it was a Kelantanese girl! Poverty cannot be solved by marriage.PH government has many other religious problem to be solved involving Malaysian citizens.
