A couple with a baby in a stroller almost fall victim to a faulty escalator on Saturday (Jan 21), after the escalator platform behind them fell right after the step off.
The Star Online reported that the incident took place at a shopping mall in Pasir Ris, Singapore, on an escalator going downwards from the third to second floor.
Centre Manager Koreen Koh said CCTV footage confirmed that the 4.35pm incident happed as the couple were leaving the escalator landing with the stroller. Mall management responded immediately and was reported to be onsite at 4.40pm. The escalator was also immediately closed off for the safety of shoppers.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
“We are presently working with the authorities and our service provider, Otis, to investigate the cause of the incident. The escalator will be closed [until] further notice,” said Koh.
“Even as this is an isolated incident, we are taking all precautions and conducting additional safety checks and monitoring for all escalators in the mall.”
She said that all their escalators undergo monthly inspections, and the affected set was last serviced in December.
