The Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan (Patriot) has warned that the anti-International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) rally scheduled for Dec 8 could be a catalyst to a possible riot.
Its president Brigadier-General (R) Datuk Mohamed Arshad Raji said Patriot noted the spate of incendiary speeches and messages provoking hatred circulating through social media of late, claiming it was a cause for alarm.
As such, he said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun and the authorities should monitor these speeches and messages on social media before it is too late.
“Patriot is very concerned that the anti-ICERD protest has been used as a catalyst to possibly stage a planned riot and chaos in different parts of the country.
“We urge the IGP and the police to closely monitor all the hate speeches and viral messages by the group out to create trouble. Nip the problem in the bud before things get out of control,“ he said in a statement.
Umno and PAS had recently announced they would lead the rally on Dec 8, with top leaders from both parties set to make an appearance.
Mohamed Arshad pointed out that among other things, there have also been concerted attacks on DAP leaders, a threat to instigate a May 13 racial strike, and accusation that the Deputy Defence Minister (Liew Chin Tong) was a DAP spy and that the Finance Minister (Lim Guan Eng) was diverting funds for Malay students to Chinese temples.
“These are connected happenings and not isolated events,“ he said, adding that there should be a limit to free speech.
Mohamed Arshad also noted the recent messages by a newly formed group, Gagasan Kuasa 3 (G3) that he claimed were aimed to provoke hatred and instigate a racial riot.
On who would benefit from such racial strife, Mohamed Arshad said the answer was obvious – leaders from Barisan Nasional.
“There are several leaders from the previous administration awaiting trials and who are under investigations. The stakes for them are very high, and like drowning men, they will do anything, even destroy our nation.
Anti-ICERD rally on Dec 8 now a celebratory gathering
The rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) here on December 8 will still go on but as a celebratory gathering after the government decided against ratifying the United Nations’ document today.
Welcoming the announcement by the Prime Minister’s Office, PAS mouthpiece Harakah said on its website that the rally has been rebranded as ‘himpunan kejayaan dan kesyukuran rakyat menolak ICERD (assembly of the rakyat’s victory and gratitude in rejecting ICERD).
PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man was reported as saying the rally, which is jointly organised with Umno, at Dataran Merdeka will now consist of prayers and speeches.
700k Umno & PAS members to attend anti-ICERD rally
Some 700,000 Umno and PAS members are expected to turn up at the rally to protest against Malaysia acceding to the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) on Dec 8.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Umno was committed to ask 350,000 of its members to attend the rally set to be held in Kuala Lumpur.
He informed that PAS had also pledged the same numbers.
