Malaysian telecommunications is a very competitive space, and companies will stop at nothing to make sure they emerge as the better options for Malaysians. One company’s attempt to undermine their competition, however, didn’t go so well with the public.
U-Mobile has recently released a series of viral videos promoting their data plans, which they claim are much simpler and useful compared to their competition. In order to convey the message clearer, they created four personas – Ah Pex (Celcom’s X-Pax), Panas Ling (Maxis’s Hotlink), You Mo Bao (U-Mobile), and D. Kabali Gee (Digi), in a “Telecolympics” competing to see who is better.
The video pokes fun at the complexity of mobile data offerings in Malaysia, which severely limits available data based on the time of the day or other limiters, as compared to You Mo Bao, who has access to all data at any time of the day.
While I appreciate the pun, it appears the rest of the public did not enjoy the comparison very well. Many came forward to criticise the telco’s move to attack competitors, instead of working better to fix their products and services, especially when it comes to their service coverage.
Here’re some of their comments:
“Data setiap hari pun, kalau dah keluar kawasan , u mo bao pun terus terkedu dan tido… laju camana pun, kalau coverage limited, kirim salam,” (Doesn’t matter if you have all-day data when you are out of the coverage area. Speed is useless if the coverage is limited.)
U Mobile Data Percuma Sepanjang Masa Di Mana-Mana sahaja ? hahaha. Troll of the year ! Coverage sucks la wei. Ape guna bagi data banyak tapi coverage cam haram? (U Mobile Free Data Anytime Anywhere? Hahaha, troll of the year! Coverage sucks la wei. What’s the point of having a lot of data when there’s no coverage?)
Full disclosure – this is not an attempt to undermine the company, we honestly think U-Mobile has a great prepaid plan, they even have an iPhone prepaid plan – the only one in Malaysia to do so!
