“I see HUMANS but no HUMANITY”, a quote to sum up the annual Lychee and Dog Meat Festival – most commonly known as the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. If you’re unsure of what I’m talking about, let me give you a brief history on the annual torture festival.
NOTE: There will be really disturbing images as you scroll down this article. If you don’t wish to read it, as least share it to spread the awareness. It is gruesome and yet somehow the even is allowed to go on. Be warned.
Ever since 2010 on every summer solstice, an event would be held annually whereby the Yunlin Festival-goers consume almost more than 15,000 dogs each year in the span of the 10 days long festival and no I’m not kidding.
If you think that eating dogs is cruel enough, wait till you see what they do with the dogs before eating them. Yunlin Festival goers believe that the more tortured and beat up the dog is before cooking, the better and healthier their meat.
BACKLASH FROM SOCIETY
If you’re wondering, “Why hasn’t anyone prevented this event yet!?” well, that’s where you’re wrong. We have tried to stop it on many occasions every year. The festival has violated countless of Animal rights and activists had even formed up petitions countless of times to prevent the event from ever occurring again.
Recently this month, Animal rights activists had handed over to Beijing authorities a petition with 11 million signatures protesting the festival. Despite the enormous backlash from Animal Rights Activists, organisations, public figures, world leaders and even from the majority of society.
Despite the backlash and widespread opposition from the people, China’s southern city of Yulin isn’t ready to stop at any time as they are all geared up for the upcoming dog meat festival. Guess when is the upcoming Yulin Festival?
It’s today, on the 21st June 2016 and it will be held continuously for the next ten days.
So what gives China?! What’s wrong with you?! Why are you still allowing the event to go on even after years of massive backlash from the rest of the world!?
Don’t get the entirety of China wrong, some of its locals are fully against the festival’s rituals in torturing and eating dog meat. However, for those who are fully supportive of it, the event represents a source of pride for many locals.
So has the authorities taken any actions to prevent this? Not really. With the increase in scrutiny this year, residents have witness an unusual amount of extra reinforcements on the streets where dog meat are popularly consumed.
Marketplace and restaurants that sell and serve dog meat have both been under protection from authorities after being threatened countless of times from protestors.Several restaurants had also noticeably removed references to dog meat from their signs. Restaurant owners declined to comment on the reason.
There are no words to describe hurtful it is to see these dogs being tortured. Remember, it’s not about being American, Chinese, Indian, Malay or whatsoever, it’s about being human. As even Ricky Gervais tried putting an end to it last year…
It’s important to bring this to awareness to friends and family because it just breaks my hurt to see this festival go on and on every single year. Though progress has been made, it isn’t enough to stop what is needed to be stopped a long time ago ever since it started – heck, it shouldn’t even have started in the first place.
So please, if you truly care, please inform and educate those who are unaware of it. It hurts my heart to see this go on. A quote once said, “I can’t see how anyone would be okay with this, moreover a human being with compassion in them”
