Many of us are guilty of playing with our phones before we go to sleep. Regardless, if you’re scrolling through social media, playing games, or reading comics, not only is this not a relaxing thing to do before you sleep, it is actually bad for your body, especially if you lay on your side.
A 16-year-old girl from Kaohsiung, Taiwan reportedly experienced severe back pain which prompted her mother to bring her to the doctor.
After consulting with an orthopedic surgeon, an X-ray of her back was taken and the result shocked both the girl and her mother.
According to TVBS, the left side of her spine had a serious curvature of 50 degrees! The doctor deduced that the severe curvature was due to the girl’s habit of always laying on her right side on the bed and playing with her phone.
He said that this had put more pressure on her right side, especially on her thoracic vertebrae and lumbar vertebrae.
It turns out, the girl rarely exercised as well so her core muscles were not strong enough to support her body in that position for long. The doctor also added that this was not the only posture problems he had encountered as there was a case of his patient suffering from a 38-degree spine curvature.
This case happened because his patients would often look down a lot on their mobile phones and he advised others to always ensure their posture is right whenever they were using their phones!
Now that you’ve seen what your habits can lead to, you better start changing them! Keeping a good posture is not only good for you now, but it also helps in the long run. We understand that in this digital age, it has become a hassle to go out to exercise, but we must make the effort in order to live a healthy life! Get off your chairs now and do some light exercises for starters!
