Pointing out worsening traffic congestion in Malaysia, as well as increased Malaysian travellers and Hijrah pilgrims, a Malaysian minister claimed the GST enriched Malaysians instead of burdening them.
Began Serai’s MP (BN) Noor Azmi was quoted saying earlier this year, refuting opposition lawmakers who claimed GST caused price hikes and further burdening Malaysians.
“You said the rakyat is suffering, but I see more and more cars on the road every day. In the airport – not KLIA, just Terengganu’s airport – over 40,000 Muslims travelled to perform their haj this year alone. No matter how bad it is, people are travelling to Indonesia and Vietnam for holidays”
He further claimed that the opposition is just twisting facts saying that GST is putting a burden to Malaysians, dismissing it as a lie and baseless accusation.
What he forgot to mention is that Malaysians have no choice but to own their own vehicles because our public transportation is so bad we might as well walk. Also, I still cannot fathom how making things more expensive is going to make us richer – especially when the government is moving to cut spending (subsidies, scholarships etc) but increase taxes?
Perhaps it is because I do not have a degree in economics, but how can paying more in taxes, yet get nothing in return in terms of government support, increase the amount of money in my bank?
If GST is meant to enrich people, I’m pretty sure that ‘people’ does not include the Malaysian public.
