29-year old Penang footballer garnered nearly 60% of the votes to become the first Asian to win the 2016 FIFA Puskas Award for his amazing league match goal last year.
Faiz received the award during the FIFA Football Awards 2016 in Zurich on Monday. Faiz beat two other shortlisted player, the 24-year-old Corinthians midfielder Marlone and 17-year-old Venezuelan national women’s player Daniuska Rodriguez. The three were shortlisted via online votes from the public from the initial ilst of 10 players, of which includes stars like Lionel Messi and Neymar.
Faiz scored from a free-kick in a 4-1 win over Pahang in a Super League match at City Stadium on Feb 16 last year.
The Puskas Award was introduced in 2009 to recognize the best goal of the year and Faiz now join an elite band of players who have won the award. The previous big names to have won the award includes Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (2009), Brazilian Neymar (2011), Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Sweden (2013) and Colombian James Rodriguez (2014).
