Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said the two party’s strong individuals former prime minister Najib Razak and president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to make way for new faces if they really care about the Malay community.
The Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh said both of them need to take such action because Umno is seen as ‘defective’ in the eyes of the people at this time.
The sacrifice he meant, according to a report by Utusan Malaysia, was to give way to others in the party’s leadership.
“Give way to others,” he said.
Tengku Razaleigh, who is also the chairman of the Umno Advisory Council, said he was not sure whether Ahmad Zahid or Najib would contest again in the next 15th general election (GE).
But he said it would be necessary for the two MPs to make sacrifices if they love the Malays as much as they claimed or assured in the party.
Ahmad Zahid is the current Umno president, who is replacing Najib in 2019. He is facing almost 50 charges in court, including 12 involving breach of trust charges.
Meanwhile, Najib, on the other hand, is dealing with dozens of charges of breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering involving 1MDB funds.
Both of them were charged in court after Pakatan Harapan (PH) took control of Putrajaya in 2018. However, Pakatan Harapan has been overthrown by the Perikatan Nasional earlier this year, of which Umno is part of the coalition.
In the Umno election in 2018, Tengku Razaleigh contested for the presidency but lost to Ahmad Zahid. Also participating in the competition were former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar and two other candidates.
According to Tengku Razaleigh, Ahmad Zahid and Najib need to prioritize Umno over other matters.
“Otherwise, we (Umno) are nowhere to be found. Sacrifice is important, in religion we are required to sacrifice, in our society, there is also sacrifice.
“Just a moment, a term of five years,” he said.
Previously, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah also said that he believed that his party will ditch PPBM in facing the upcoming 15th general election to enable their party to win in a dominant position.
“PPBM should not even exist (in that possibility). They (UMNO party members) feel that it (cooperation) should happen only among the Muafakat (National) Pas, UMNO with traditional Barisan Nasional (i.e.) MCA and MIC partners.
“So, then there will be no problem in the distribution of seats but if you bring PPBM, we will probably face (election) results in that cause us to be in a ‘hanging’ situation again, no one has a dominant position, no one has a clear majority.
“Then, we will face a very unstable situation,” he said.
When asked if he believes UMNO will continue to support Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Prime Minister in the next GE, Tengku Razaleigh replied, he did not think that would happen.
“I do not think so. The arrangement in the Perikatan Nasional (as it is now) is merely to ensure stability. When we face the GE, it is a different situation. UMNO will think and take appropriate action, “he added.
Yesterday, the Muafakat Nasional’s secretary-general Annuar Musa, said that Umno and PAS have agreed to support Muhyiddin as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the 15th General Election, after the matter was discussed in a recent meeting.
